Australia’s WIN TV Network is considering stripping back its local news services to the minimum required under its license conditions, in the face of demands for higher fees by its metropolitan affiliate Nine TV Network. WIN is weighing its budget options for its 17 local news bulletins and the daily hour of Australian news for regional markets. But, faced with tougher financial reality, it is reluctantly considering a major reduction in its news spending, which totals between A$15-A$25 million yearly. Nine has threatened to let WIN “go to black” on New Year’s Day unless it meets Nine’s demand to raise its affiliation fee from around 39% of WIN’s advertising revenue to 55%.
