Very few of today’s TV trade media publications feature a page devoted to book reviews. VideoAge is one of the few magazines that does so regularly. In fact, book reviews have been a staple of VideoAge almost since its inception. Since 1989, eight years after the magazine debuted, the publication has delivered over 293 reviews of books related to the business and art of film and TV entertainment.

Recently, however, the VideoAge book review feature came under academic scrutiny regarding whether it constitutes “book criticism” or a “book review” — a distinction supported by many books on the subject.

In the case of VideoAge, the feature clearly falls into the “book review” category. It does not offer subjective opinions, comparisons, or counterarguments. It simply summarizes the contents of each book as faithfully as possible.

While book critics generally offer detailed, analytical assessments of books grounded in literary expertise, VideoAge’s book reviews are written in a casual and clear tone tailored to fellow industry readers.
