Meta — the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — is being sued by the U.S. states of California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey under the Federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998.
These lawsuits come on the heels of Meta’s losses in civil cases in New Mexico and Los Angeles, while the company has also settled another court case involving a Kentucky school district.
Reportedly, Meta is facing numerous lawsuits from more than 40 state attorneys general, school districts, and social media users. The lawsuits allege that Meta has prioritized growth over safety and has designed its platforms in ways that encourage children to become addicted to them and keep coming back.
For its part, Meta has reported that it has taken measures to prevent children from using its platforms in unsafe ways.
