Yesterday, VideoAge’s daily newsletter reported that the leftist Mexican government wants to control the country’s media through its Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT). Today, according to the U.S. ABC television network, the conservative American government wants to control the country’s media through its Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
On Tuesday, Disney-owned ABC filed a First Amendment lawsuit against the FCC, the U.S. regulatory agency, for challenging the broadcast licenses of its eight owned-and-operated TV stations in an effort to regulate their programming, including the daytime show The View and the late-night program Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Last year, FCC chairman Brendan Carr launched a probe into Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative, alleging illegal discriminatory practices. ABC and Disney argue that the investigation is being used as a justification for actions that are actually motivated by the network’s editorial content.
