Nintendo is getting another major boost from its move into movies and other businesses built around its intellectual property (IP).
The Japanese videogame maker said The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since its release in April, making it another major theatrical success for the Mario franchise. The film, produced by Nintendo and Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures, is the follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which generated more than $1.3 billion at the global box office.
The success is also showing up in Nintendo’s financial results. Revenue from its IP-related business, which includes income from movies and videos as well as royalties, merchandise and other licensing activities, more than doubled during the quarter to ¥34.8 billion, or about $221 million.
