California Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to decide by September 30, 2026, whether to sign a first-of-its-kind tax credit designed to support local journalism. More than 180 news and media organizations have urged him to approve the measure before the deadline, which would provide financial support to newsrooms that employ journalists.
According to the News/Media Alliance, California has lost more than 12,000 local journalists since 2002. The organization argues that the employment tax credits would give news organizations additional resources to retain reporters and rebuild local coverage.
The program would direct more than $40 million annually toward local news organizations. It would be funded through a separate provision that eliminates a California corporate tax break for executive compensation above $1 million.
