The 83rd Venice Film Festival (September 2-12, 2026) came to a close on Saturday, September 12, with its traditional award ceremony at Palazzo del Cinema in Venice Lido.
The international jury — chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal and composed of Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Johnnie To — bestowed the top honor, the Golden Lion for Best Film, on Kvinde Ukendt (Woman Unknown), directed by May el-Toukhy (Denmark, Sweden, Latvia). The thriller explores the aftermath of war through the story of a woman living in the immediate postwar period.
The film also earned the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress for Mathilde Arcel’s performance, while the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor went to John Malkovich for his role in Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh (U.S., Chile).
Out of 21 films in competition, the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize went to Ga-neung-han sa-rang (Possible Love), directed by Lee Chang-dong (South Korea). The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Ilya Khrzhanovsky for Dau (Germany, France, Sweden).
The award for Best Screenplay was given to Stéphane Brizé, Coralie Amédéo, and Olivier Gorce for Un bon petit soldat, directed by Stéphane Brizé (France).
80-minute documentary Naza, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor (U.K.), was awarded the Special Jury Prize.
