Flavio Bolsonaro is under investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court over suspicious funding for Dark Horse, a biopic about his father, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The investigation comes less than a month before the first round of the presidential election. Senator Bolsonaro, a right-wing presidential candidate, is challenging left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a race that polls suggest is tightening.
The investigation follows a decision by Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin to lift the secrecy order on records related to the collapse of Banco Master, a bank owned by former banker Daniel Vorcaro, who was arrested on fraud charges. According to the released documents, Flavio Bolsonaro allegedly asked Vorcaro for about 130 million reais (US$25.37 million) to finance Dark Horse. The money was allegedly transferred through a U.S.-based fund controlled by the lawyer for Eduardo Bolsonaro — Flavio’s brother and another son of the former president — who lives in the United States.
Brazilian Federal Police carried out 49 search-and-seizure warrants in several states. Targets of the operation included pro-Bolsonaro lawmaker Mario Frias and producer Karina Gama, head of Go Up Entertainment, the company producing the film, which stars American actor Jim Caviezel as Jair Bolsonaro. Both Frias and Gama have been barred from leaving the country.
