Sony Interactive Entertainment will discontinue physical game-disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028, as the company responds to the continuing shift in consumer preferences from physical media to digital formats.

Following the January 2028 cutoff, new PlayStation games will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and at retail outlets. Sony said the transition will not affect games that have already been released on disc or games scheduled for release in disc format before January 2028.

The move marks a significant step in the industry’s transition from physical to digital distribution, reflecting the growing dominance of digital game purchases and downloads.

During MIPCOM 2026 in Cannes, VideoAge Monthly will feature a cover story examining the various phases of the videogame industry and exploring the future of gaming itself.
