According to a study commissioned by Rome-based FAPAV (Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content Industries), the total economic impact of piracy in Italy is estimated at €2.3 billion (US$2.66 billion) in lost revenue, along with approximately 11,100 lost jobs or missed employment opportunities.

In 2025, the prevalence of audiovisual content piracy stood at 37 percent of the Italian population, corresponding to approximately 20 million Italians.

However, the FAPAV/IPSOS/DOXA survey revealed a downward trend: a 4 percent decrease compared with 2024 and a 7 percent drop compared with 2023. This means that more than one million people have stopped using illegal streaming devices over the past two years.

Despite perceptions surrounding sports piracy, the study confirmed that movies remained the most pirated type of content, accounting for 28 percent, followed by TV series and dramas (23 percent), television programs (19 percent), and live sports (14 percent).
