The 73rd Venice International Film Festival has canceled its opening gala dinner and party, out of solidarity with the victims of the earthquake in central Italy on Wednesday. The 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck during the early hours, and destroyed hundreds of homes and nearly entire villages, with the death toll reaching 250. The tremors were felt in Rome and Bologna. The festival organizers made a statement expressing “our deepest sympathies for the victims, as well as heartfelt solidarity and closeness to the hard-hit communities.”
