This year’s Rio Games will dominate the airwaves. With 6,755 hours of total viewing on NBC and its affiliates (and deals with social media sites), the coverage of the upcoming Olympics represents a 22% increase from the 2012 London Games (for comparison: 170 hours were carried by NBC during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics). Most of this year’s programming will air live, with some repackaging and delays (tonight’s Opening Ceremony will be on a one-hour delay, at 7:30/6:30c). Additionally, NBC will distribute 83 hours 4K UHD coverage for cable, satellite and telco providers, including footage from the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, swimming, track and field, basketball, the men’s soccer final and judo. Although the athlete profiles will remain this year, they will top off at four minutes.
