The Berlin International Film Festival mourns the passing of Michael Ballhaus, who died April 12. Ballhaus was an innovative cinematographer who was a guest several times at the festival and served as the International Jury president in 1990. In 2016, the Berlinale dedicated an homage to Ballhaus’ work and he received an Honorary Golden Bear. He had a expansive career, working with directors Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese, among others.
