The Locarno International Film Festival wrapped up on Saturday, after screening 279 films. Bulgarian filmmaker Ralitza Petrova was awarded the grand prize, the Golden Leopard, for her first feature film, Godless. The film delves into Bulgaria’s crime world: the film’s lead, Irena Ivanova, was presented with the best actress award for her portrayal of a nurse with drug addiction who sells identity cards on the black market. Out of 17 films in competition for the top prize, women directed eight. Additionally, Radu Jude’s Scarred Hearts took home the special jury prize, Joao Pedro Rodrigues was awarded best director for The Ornithologist and Andrzej Seweryn was named best actor for The Last Family.
