In a press conference held yesterday, Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Sports Group, and Alan Wurtzel, president of Research & Media Development for NBC Universal, the executives answered concerns about declining viewership. Nielsen reported that NBC’s rating for this year’s opening ceremony was 35 percent lower than 2012’s, and Deadline noted that the opening weekend’s primetime ratings were lower than the four previous Summer Olympics. However, as Lazarus pointed out, compared to other primetime shows, Olympics coverage is measurably the most-watched. As a response to digital streaming, NBC has published “total audience delivery” statistics that measure viewership across TV channels and digital platforms.
