Sonar Entertainment has entered into a first-look deal with Smokehouse Pictures, George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s the independent production company. Under the pact, the company will produce drama and comedy series for cable and streaming outlets. The first project under the deal will be America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker, based on Steven Brill’s serialized Huffington Post article about a pharmaceutical company that heavily marketed a drug while hiding data about its serious side effects. Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (Making a Murderer) will adapt with Nicki Paluga, with Ricciardi and Demos directing. Smokehouse also has Ms, a miniseries about Gloria Steinem and the founding of Ms Magazine, set up at HBO, and The Studio, an ongoing series about a movie studio in the 1990’s, set up at Showtime.
